Harold George Nicolson correspondence, 1931-1965.

The collection consists of five letters, including three from Nicolson to literary agent Ann Pearn, a letter from Philip Allison Shelley to Nicolson, and Nicolson's reply. Includes: to Ann Pearn, 16 Jan. 1931, concerning a recent article rejected by Vanity Fair, also containing an amusing line drawing of Nicolson; to Ann Pearn, 28 Nov. 1931, asking to meet Louis Bromfield when he arrives; to Ann Pearn, 28 April 1932, mentioning a trip to Berlin, and giving directions to visit Sissinghurst Castle. Also, a typewritten letter from Philip Allison Shelley to Nicolson, 16 June 1965, with handwritten draft, asking for information on Benjamin Beresford for an article, and permission to quote from Nicolson's The desire to please, which contains observations on Beresford; Nicolson's reply, 21 June 1965, relating that he has no further information but giving permission to quote from The desire to please.

Philip Allison Shelley was born in York, Pennsylvania, on 7 August 1907. He earned degrees from Penn State (1929) and Harvard (M.A., comparative literature, 1930; Ph.D., Germanic philology, 1938). With the aid of an Ottendorfer Memorial Fellowship, he studied at the German universities in Berlin and Goettingen in 1933 and 1934.
